Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve
The Elachee Visitor Center is connected through 8 miles of hiking paths. with Elachee's Aquatic Studies Center at Chicopee Lake, which is set amidst the beauty of the 1,440-acre Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve. Enjoy one of Georgia's best preserved greenspaces' calm beauty.
The Chicopee Woods Hiking Pathways offer 4.5 miles of paved trails.
There are 8 miles of trails for hiking to choose from, lakeshore wildlife monitoring areas, over 21 miles of mountain bike trails and numerous meeting facilities.
Chicopee Woods, which opened in the early to mid 1990s, has enthralled generations of mountain bikers and its a part of Gainesville mountain biking life. The trails here range from old-school rake-and-ride to new-school contour trails developed by machines. The Southern Off-Road Biking Association maintains the trails at Chicopee Woods on a regular basis.
This forest area features moderate, shaded pathways that go across rolling topography between the piedmont and the Blue Ridge Mountains. The woodland was originally set aside to keep the towns water supply pure. The trees are thought to be over 150 years old. A big variety of species can be found. The Elachee Nature Science Center manages Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve, a 1,400-acre protected forest with a visitor center and a nature school. Elachee has been encouraging environmental education and a balanced environment consciousness among Georgians. for more than 35 years. Chicopee is North Georgia's largest contiguous preservation area.
You won't find long-range vistas or falling waterfalls here, but you will cross many creeks and navigate around a tiny lake. These trails aren't very difficult, but they're well-kept and well-marked, with blazes and charts at every intersection.
One per each circle, there are two parking spots. There are no restrooms in any location. During operating hours, the Science Center has bathrooms. The Bridge Loop begins on Elachee Dr. at either end of the parking lot. You might also park at the Science Center and walk the pathways that connect there. The route starts at the far right corner of the lake parking lot or just inside the gate to the left of the entry, traveling behind the buildings.
The Bridge Loop and the Lake Loop are combined in this loop. There are no precise directions because you can start from numerous spots and travel any route you desire. There are trail signs and maps at every intersection, and the trails are well-blazed, so getting lost shouldn't be an issue no matter where you start. Just keep an eye out for the green and orange blazes. The suspension bridge is located near the section where the two loops overlap for.4 mile. You won't miss it because it's visible from the western intersection of the two loops.
